Good introductory set 2010-03-07 |
| By Splatt (Utah) |
I bought this set because I wanted to practice playing in other keys but couldn't afford to buy a set of more expensive harmonicas. I was pleasantly surprised when I received it.
The harmonicas are decent, but nothing spectacular (well, what do you expect for $20)? These are basically the same as the Clearly Colorful harmonicas that Hohner makes for children (i.e. really on the low end), just in a wider range of keys. They are extremely light, which may take some getting used to if (like me) you like your harmonicas to have some weight to them. The comb and covers are plastic, and some weren't finished as well as they could have been (burrs on the plastic, etc), but nothing that wasn't easily cleaned up. The reed plates are made of a lighter brass than the other inexpensive Hohner harmonicas. I will admit, the black-and-gold motif is an attractive one, but I wonder how long the gold print is going to last.
The sound isn't too bad, either. As other reviewers have mentioned, a few of the reeds didn't work so well right out of the box. Some basic harmonica tweaking took care of that, and now all of them work just fine. Like all harmonicas, they needed to be broken in a little bit, and the sound and responsiveness improved with playing. They're not perfect, but have a nice, warm tone (especially the lower keys) that won't make you cringe when you play them. And yes, I'm able to bend notes on them without difficulty.
The case is nice, with a hard inner frame covered by tough stitched nylon. It's padded on the inside to protect your instruments as well, and has a double-zipper closure with an additional Velcro flap. The slots are sized for standard diatonic harps, so if/when you decide to upgrade a particular key, the new harp should fit without difficulty.
Overall this is a good set for the price. If you'd like to gain experience playing in different keys but can't afford to break the bank, this set is a good choice to get you started. |
Good first time set 2010-02-23 |

| The shells of the harps are plastic so they are light and not as durable as the metal ones. After you work them in they sound good, but some of them take awhile to loosen up for you. |
Cheap is as cheap does! 2010-02-16 |

| Darn, got the Piedmont Blues set from Hohner...plastic comb..OK...plastic shell..not OK...cheapy reeds...Bad! Thought maybe they sounded bad because of the plastic shell...so switched out with shell from special 20...it fits perfectly but still sounds dull and no volume! Total bumber man! Was hoping to find replacement reeds for my Special 20s but no go. The brass reed plates are obviously not of the same quality or thickness as in the other standard harps Hohner offers. These are perfect for kids just learning and that is it! I will be giving these away. |

Ok. If you are looking at these harmonicas you know one thing, they are not top of the line high quality harmonics. With that out of the way, I am extremely satisfied with these. I'm not a serious harmonica player. I have a Golden Melody that I like to mess around with. I got these because the band I play in has 2 songs that need a hardmonica. One for an intro the other for a solo. Rather than spend $60 on 2 golden melodies, I got these 7 for $24. They are cheap, yes. I had one bad note on one of the harmonicas, but I think that it will work itself out with playing (had a similar issues with my golden melody and it is fine now).
I agree with other comments here that there is a plastic smell / taste, but its plastic, you'll have that and it will go away in time. Just leave the case open for a while (like several days).
I am perfectly happy with what I got for the money. Thus the 5 stars even with the one bad note. If I were to rate these against my golden melody they would not stack up, but that's not what I paid for. |
